Ornate butterfly fish have strong pair bonds and mate for life. This is one such pair looking out over their territory.
They subsist solely on coral and coral mucus, so they cannot survive in an aquarium. They roam freely within their territory as a pair, and while they tolerate the presence of other butterfly fish of different species, they defend their turf from other ornate butterfly fish. Despite their diet, they are not detrimental to the reefs they inhabit.
When fleeing predators, the pair will move as a unit until it becomes clear they cannot escape together. At that point, they’ll swim in opposite directions to ensure at least one of them survives.
